What does Roy Disney have to do with the Maritime Academy? Fair question. There are several answers:
- Roy played a key role in the 1989 production of Disney’s nautically themed animated classic “The Little Mermaid.” Although the plot actually involves the attempts of a young mermaid princess to leave the ocean at all costs, it inspired a generation of landlubbers to delight in such maritime wonders as the underwater kingdoms of the North Mediterranean and crustacean bands.
- Roy lives in Los Angeles County, which is in the state of California, the same California in which the California Maritime Academy is located.
- Roy Disney own approximately 1% of the Disney Corporation, and, consequently, 0.25% of the planet. This affords Roy with the resources needed to excel in the sport of yacht racing. According to the commencement press release, Roy is internationally known for his involvement in the world sailing community and has held several sailing speed records including the Chicago-to-Mackinac, Newport-Bermuda and the Los Angeles to-Hawaii Transpac.
