The San Francisco Bay is a metropolitan area of 7.5 million people and three major American cities built around a network of tidal waterways<\/span><\/strong>. This estuary system is the end point for 40% of California’s fresh water, which drains into Pacific Ocean<\/strong> via the Sacramento River<\/strong>. This system is built around two sub-bays (San Francisco <\/strong>& San Pablo<\/strong>), where over forty watersheds drain, including:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Major rivers<\/span><\/strong><\/span> of Napa<\/strong> and Sonoma<\/strong><\/span> counties (Napa & Petaluma rivers, Sonoma Creek).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 A patchwork of urban creeks<\/span><\/strong>, often paved over and underground.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 A network of mountain creeks<\/span><\/strong> (Marin<\/strong>, San Mateo<\/strong> , Santa Clara<\/strong> counties). These creeks and their tributaries drain lush redwood forest that is a part a narrow band of habitat along the Pacific Coast, from central California to southern Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n
